Gmail to MSN messenger and misc tutorial

Hello fellow readers. If you are one of the proud users of a gmail account, but don’t know how to use it over your messenger, or want to have your hotmail delivered to your gmail, then this is the article you have to read.

MSN messenger functionality:

The first thing we have to do, is to get a passport for our gmail.

We should first head to passport.net, where you’ll have to click the big image (01) that says “Register” on the right hand side of the site.

01

After clicking the register button, you’ll get this form you have to fill (02). After filling it appropiatedly (the E-mail address field must be filled with your gmail address) you will then be granted a yourusername@passport.com account. You will afterwards be sent a confirmation e-mail at your gmail account.

02

You will then receive a confirmation e-mail on your gmail account (03).

03

After clicking on the confirmation link, you should head again to passport.net and click on the Sign In button. You should get a screen like this (04):

04

After you sign in, you will be redirected to the same screen as in (01). You will then have to click on the “View or edit your profile” you’ll get a screen like this one (05). Below the part where “yourusername@passport.com” is displayed, is a link that says “I need to change this”. Click it.

05

A screen as this (06) should be displayed. Type in your new e-mail address (gmail address) and click on ‘Change’. You’ll then receive another confirmation e-mail and after confirming your e-mail address change for the passport account, you can now sign in to your account through MSN Messenger.

Receiving your Hotmail on your Gmail

A small application exists that allows you to forward all your new e-mails from hotmail to your gmail account. The application is called GetMail.

First visit this site and go to the bottom of the page (07). Click on the Download link and then install the program.

07

After running the program, the following (08) UI is shown. Fill each form properly and toggle whichever checkboxes best suit your needs.

08

Afterwards, you should get this other program (09), called Gmail Agent. Locate the download link on the site, click on it, and after downloading the file you should install it.

09

The following (10) UI is shown after running the Gmail Agent. You should fill each form and add your account to the list.

10

You might want to add Gmail agent’s shortcut to your startup folder (11)

11

Importing your contacts from other accounts.

First of all, you should go and read this FAQ (12). If the method for hotmail doesn’t work for you, you can try the following one.

12

Having saved your contacts list as a *.csv file, you can also go to Excel, and save it as a txt file with tabs (13).

13

Here comes Gmail Agent to the rescue: right click on the Gmail Agent Icon. Click on ‘Contacts’. And then choose a user and import the tabulated text file you had saved previously, as shown in (14).

14

Tips for Mozilla/Fire Fox users:

Don’t you hate it when you click on a mailto tag and you immediately launch outlook express or hotmail? Well, in comes WebMailCompose (15). It allows you to right click a mailto link, and choose to send the mail with … *drum roll* … Gmail!!!

15

Don’t have Mozilla? Get it!!! (16)

16

If you’d like to get some help, tutorials and some more stuff, you can head towards this site (17)

And if you’d like to see which extensions I have installed, you can take a look at them over here.
