Worthwhile Reading

2004/10/17 by Rolando Garza

Ok, this got delayed a bit more than I hoped.

As I was reading Fark, during Saturday afternoon, I clicked on what seemed a usual (tags= sad, funny, pwn3d) Fark headline:

St. Marys College duped into thinking it was getting $121 mil anonymous donation, builds building before getting the check. Hilarity ensues

The article itself was interesting, a bit on top of the average.

Upon heading for the comments section, I noticed Katherine had been the first person to comment. She said:

did they deposit a junk check?

The link she posted led me through the wonderful, magical adventure that reading is.

This story is about an adventure that got Patrick Combs famous (but his story got a bit covered up because of the O.J. Simpson trial outcome, back then). This one is a great read. And you also get to learn a bit about the negotiability of checks that have ‘non-negotiable’ printed on top of them:

In May of 1995, I suddenly found myself smack in the middle of a very unusual ‘life experiment.’ I deposited a junk mail check into my ATM and to my absolute dismay, it cashed. Thus began the wildest adventure I’ve ever been on in my life.

Well, I advise you take a break from the break you were taking while reading this, and go read this instead.
