I’m not that fond of watching sports on TV. I’d rather play a game of soccer than watch it on TV… except for classic matches like Monterrey vs. Tigres. Or yesterday’s match between Mexico and USA… with Mexico winning 2-1, of course.
I had just woken up at the time of the game (for I had stayed up until 6:00 a.m. the day before fixing some darned java-friggin-scripting errors I had…), so I missed the National Anthem for both countries.
I was shocked to learn today that apparently, Mexican soccer fans had booed the U.S. national anthem:
The crowd booed the U.S. national anthem and a spattering of fans chanted “Osama! Osama!” before play started, and shortly after Lewis’ goal.
Cinema Simulated said: “Oh, well then, if FOX reported it I’m sure it’s not true at all…” Then again, the previous article from the AP said it, so it must be true.
Well, getting back on topic, jefe_gonzo pointed out in this thread from Fark.com, that this has happened before.
I couldn’t help but ask myself: “Why would anyone show deliberate disrespect for another country?“
But I couldn’t come up with a rational answer… then, along came consdubya and said:

Which pretty much washes away that feeling of ‘pena ajena’ for my fellow ‘compatriotas’. Then again, as jbc put it:

People shout stupid things all the time at sports matches. I know its now cool to hate foreigners because of 9/11 and Iraq and everything, but bringing out the “Get a brain morans!/USA! USA!/Glass parking lot/Us vs. Them” comments over what a “spattering” of drunk fans chanted is rediculous.
Now, I beleive Mexico shouldn’t portray a bad image when it comes to sports, after all, should all mexicans get blamed by a few ‘retarded’ fans?
Booing the U.S. anthem is bad… but chanting ‘Osama’ means dishonor for the thousands of people that died in 9/11, which is as bad as making fun of Terri Schiavo. So, I think that Mexico and mexicans in general need to show more respect for different cultures, and ethnicities… Now, these last point will be the theme of my next post, which will be called: “Are Mexicans Racists?”
