You could avoid it by clearing the float with an element following it that has “clear: left” set in the CSS. In my case, that was desirable behavior. Feel free to modify to suit your needs. I was actually more preoccupied about XHTML validation... and compatibility. The only browser I couldn't get working was IE 5.2 or something in a friend's Mac notebook.
