Placing Videos the Standards Compliant Way
You can skip to a specific format’s section by clicking a link from the following list:
Conclusion
Well, thats about it. It seems that using flash-based video hosting services like Google Video or YouTube is the most reliable way to showcase the content that your viewers will watch. Proprietary video formats that can’t adapt to ‘the internets’ will eventually disappear, and so will the browsers that stick to their lack of support for standards.
Feedback
I’d really appreciate comments, so if anyone has trouble watching a specific format discussed or not discussed here… just email me and I’ll try to get back at you as soon as possible.
If you know of more formats that can be placed using object elements please send me an example to rolandog@gmail.com, or maybe even place a comment here (remember to replace < and > with < and >, respectively).)
Misc. Info
There are many resources that can help you understand how to place videos in a standards compliant way. The most relevant site I found was an article that dealt with files and their MIME types, and how to place them with the object element.
When I wrote the code for each video, I was using a Windows machine and I tested the code in Firefox and in Internet Explorer 6. I did, however encounter some issues using Win/FF or when using Linux/Konqueror or Linux/FF. Autoplay doesn’t seem to work properly (causing some videos to play automatically).
Update: I just found out a great forum thread over at Moodle while searching for S.C. ways of placing Real Media files. It really sums up everything I wrote, but I’m still publishing this…
Note: Some CMSs, like Wordpress, place line breaks (<br />) automatically, so make sure to place all the object code in only one line.
Important: If you can’t see some of these videos, try getting their respective plugins… if after getting the plugins you still can’t see the videos, then it might be that I didn’t test these videos enough. Please leave a comment and fill in your email too, so I can get back to you, and also update this article. If you’re using Linux you might consider getting Automatix, since it takes care of getting those plugins and of many other things.

….doesn’t work that way…
The DivX web player plugin has a bug when you place any params in the object tag.
This http://flt.nbu.bg/taxonomy/divx_no_embed.html validates but you don’t have the full controls in non-IE browsers as you can get them in IE6 and 7.
